How to play the four-letter word ladder

1. Start a game to receive a random four-letter starting word.
2. Enter another real four-letter word by changing exactly one letter.
3. Keep making valid one-letter changes until you reach FEET.
4. Compare your number of moves with the shortest possible route.

For example, this ladder changes just one letter at each step:

A word that is not in the dictionary, or a move that changes two letters, will be rejected. Rejected entries do not count as accepted moves. There is no fixed move limit within a game, so you can take a longer route and still finish.

Is this “feet Wordle” or “Wordle feet”?

Those phrases can describe a word puzzle with coloured letters and FEET as the target. Spell Feet uses familiar green and orange letter clues, but its rules are based on a word ladder. Each accepted word must differ from the previous word by one letter.

In Wordle, players submit guesses to discover a hidden word. In Spell Feet, you already know your destination: FEET. The challenge is finding a short chain of valid words to get there.

What do the coloured letters mean?

Green means a letter matches FEET in the same position. Orange means the letter appears in FEET, but belongs in a different position. FEET contains two Es, and the clues account for repeated letters.

A useful approach is to think about words near the destination. For example, MEET is one valid step away from FEET. Work forwards from your starting word, or think backwards from the destination to find a connection.
